According to the ITF, shipping emissions in ports account
for 18 million tonnes of CO2 emissions
Shipping emissions in ports are substantial, accounting for 18 million tonnes of CO2, 0.4 million tonnes of NOx, 0.2 million of SOx, and 0.03 million tonnes of PM10 in 2011.
Shipping emissions have considerable external costs in ports, almost EUR 12 billion per year in the 50 largest ports for NOx, SOx, and PM emissions (most directly relevant to local populations).
Approximately 230 million people are directly exposed to port emissions in the top 100 world ports.
Most shipping emissions in ports (CO2, CO, CH4, and NOx) are estimated to grow 4x by 2050.
Air quality has become an important agenda topic to foster and to allow sustainable growth.
Offering cold ironing possibilities can significantly contribute to reducing shipping emissions in port. By simply turning off ship’s engines while at berth and plugging them into an electrical supply point, ports can instantly become ‘greener’.
The CMB's shorepower solutionwill provide savings of up to 49tonnes of carbon dioxide per day.
The novel technology can be favoured above a shore power station
- A mobile power barge could offer the flexibility to supply AMP capable ships with clean power, everywhere at any time without the need for a high initial CAPEX investment.
- There is no need for the expensive grid upgrades nor the investments into expensive power electronics for delivering the right Frequency/Voltage.
- No effect on cargo loading from the quayside.
