The Hydrocat 48 won in the Marine category at the Hydrogen Awards
CMB.TECH won at the Hydrogen Awards with the Hydrocat 48 in the Marine Category!
The 23th of February , the award ceremony for the Hydrogen Awards 2023 took place at Warwick University Campus in the UK. CMB.TECH won with the Hydrocat 48 in the Marine Category! The Hydrogen Awards are an annual event that recognizes exceptional enterprise, innovation, and excellence in the implementation and use of hydrogen across various industries and sectors. The judges for these awards were carefully chosen for their understanding of how the hydrogen sector works across the world.
Hydrogen is a crucial part of the world's energy future, as it is clean, efficient, and abundant. As a result, the Hydrogen Awards are committed to promoting the use of hydrogen in all industries and sectors, as well as to the public.
CMB.TECH entered the Hydrogen Awards with the Hydrocat 48, one of all different innovative hydrogen-based applications that were recognized in the different categories of the Hydrogen Awards. The Hydrocat 48 is a world-first vessel design, using an alternative low carbon fuel (hydrogen) in a dual-fuel combustion engine for which no marine legislation currently exists, and integrating the latest conventional vessel design to maximise fuel efficiency. This combination of innovative techniques and technology required collaboration between multiple experts. The Hydrocat 48 is a prime example of how innovative and sustainable technologies can revolutionize traditional industries.

We wanted to use this project to prove that dual-fuel combustion technology is the right solution for being able to start the energy transition away from fossil fuels in the maritime industry. Hydrogen combustion is green, affordable and reliable. To support operationally we also aimed to build our own mobile hydrogen refuelling trailer, so that we could take control of and deliver hydrogen fuel to the vessel wherever it was needed, with the operational backup of being able to switch back to running on traditional fuel if hydrogen is not available.
The Hydrocat 48 demonstrated the viability of dual- fuel combustion technology, powered by green and reliable hydrogen, as a crucial step towards a sustainable future for the maritime industry, and we are committed to supporting this transition through innovative solutions.

Port of Antwerp-Bruges and CMB.TECH will soon welcome the Hydrotug, the first hydrogen-powered tugboat. The Hydrotug consists of two BeHydro V12 dual fuel medium speed engines that can run on hydrogen and traditional fuel. This ground-breaking development will be used by Port of Antwerp-Bruges as an important step in the transition to a sustainable, climate neutral port by 2050 and will be operational in the first quarter of 2023.
On Tuesday, 10 May 2022, Windcat Workboats and CMB.TECH announced that the first hydrogen-powered CTV is ready for immediate operation after successful completion of trials and bunkering. This ground-breaking development for both the marine and offshore wind industries is the first CTV that uses clean fuels to reduce up to 80% of its traditional fuel usage and associated emissions. The Hydrocat 48 is a further green development, introducing clean fuel technology on the already very fuel efficient and high performing Windcat MK 3.5 design.
