Road applications for the use of hydrogen fuel have been developed and put to test at CMB.TECH for over 10 years.
H2 DUAL FUEL TECHNOLOGY
Heavy goods vehicles (HGV) require incremental innovation instead of disruptive innovation. CMB.TECH’s Lenoir H2 dual fuel technology is the first step towards the zero emission goal. This novel technology has been proved to reduce carbon emissions up to 60% on the existing HGV platforms.
Furthermore, the Lenoir 2.0 is currently being tested on the dyno test cell and looks promising to save up to 80% of CO2 emissions. CMB.TECH is marching ahead to achieve zero-emissions with the H2 mono fuel truck which is in the early stages of engineering.
In the H2 dual fuel technology, hydrogen is aspirated into the combustion chamber. This substitution directly reduces the amount of diesel fuel required to power the engine. The clean H2 fuel contains no carbon, drastically reducing the CO2 emissions whilst maintaining same power output whilst still relying on the proven technology.
HEAVY DUTY TRUCK
Large truck fleets are among the biggest contributors to Green House Gas (GHG) emissions. Hydrogen dual fuel co-combustion is a realistic and reliable clean-fuel solution, available now.
CMB.TECH have converted, in partnership with Hydra Energy, a fleet of class 8 trucks to dual fuel co-combustion.
To deliver the hydrogen required for these trucks, a system is being implementing to recover, store and reuse waste hydrogen. Ultimately the goal is to power a haulage fleet of up to 200 trucks.
In ongoing trials, each truck is seeing savings of up to 60 litres of diesel per 500km trip, giving up to a 24% reduction in CO2 emissions
Our engineering team developed and delivered 5 Refuse Collection Vehicles (RCVs) for customers across the UK. Their powertrains have been converted to run hydrogen dual fuel.
Each vehicle has up to 9kg of usable H2 on-board, giving significant CO2 savings, specifically at part load and idle which is a high proportion of their operating cycle.
The dual-fuel system installation cost is comparable to an equivalent CNG conversion and delivers greater real-world CO2 savings.
CMB.TECH TRANSIT VAN
To date, CMB.TECH has delivered 32 dual-fuel, co-combustion delivery vans, including Ford Transits and Mercedes Sprinters, to customers throughout the UK.
This unique co-combustion technology is capable of delivering <70% diesel substitution (therefore <70% CO2 savings) in real-world, city driving.
The hydrogen dual fuel system has a range of 120-180 miles, automatically switching to diesel-only when empty.
The Euro V van achieved 59g/km CO2 emissions when measured at Millbrook’s emissions facilities, under Euro V test conditions, including significant NOx reductions.
Commissioned by ULEMCo, a Euro VI conversion (with a QCM modified ECU calibration) achieved similar savings in CO2 and NOx when tested over a WLTP cycle at MIRA)]. This is a van equating to over 30% lower CO2 emission than a small, 2 seater city car.
HYDROGEN FUEL CELL VAN
As part of an Innovate UK funded programme, CMB.TECH developed a Fuel Cell Range Extender power module to address the range anxiety and charging time concerns associated with electric vehicles.
This power module was developed for aftermarket fit, with limited impact on load-carrying capability.
The Nissan eNV200 was chosen for this technology, almost doubling the effective range of the vehicle. By mounting the modular system to the roof, there is no impact on the internal load space.
HYBRID EV PHEV
Ford’s PHEV Transit uses geo-fencing and telematics developed with CMB.TECH, managing the range extender for optimal operation of battery charging and zero emissions mode.
The geo-fencing system monitors the vehicle’s location and can shut off the internal combustion engine when driving through city centres, enabling zero emissions mode.
The Transit Custom PHEV features a powertrain that combines a 1.0-liter turbocharged, three-cylinder engine that generates power for an array of lithium-ion batteries under the load floor.
The setup offers 31 miles of range purely on electric power, and the van can go over 310 miles in total.
LIGHTWEIGHT ELECTRIC VEHICLE
CMB.TECH partnered with Emerald Automotive to design, develop and build a Lightweight Electric Vehicle (LEV) in 15 months. The LEV incorporates a lightweight aluminium chassis, body and interior with integrated electric drives, diesel range extender and advanced control strategies.
This concept gives a full electric vehicle with a 60 miles range, and with the addition of a range-extender, the prototype matches the kerb weight and gross vehicle weight of a standard short wheelbase Transit.
CMB TECH HYBRID EV LONDON TAXI
The technologies and expertise mastered on the LEV programme were subsequently put to good use in the development of the TX electric taxi by CMB.TECH. The project also used advanced 3D rendering of CAD surfaces for the styling sign-off, substituting traditional clay models.
