BEH2YDRO launches 100% hydrogen engines for heavy-duty applications at World Hydrogen Summit in Rotterdam

At the World Hydrogen Summit in Rotterdam today, BEH2YDRO is launching its 100% hydrogen engines for heavy-duty applications. These innovative, zero emission engines are ready to use and will allow the industry to further engage in 100% sustainable and environmentally friendly development. BEH2YDRO is a joint venture between ABC and CMB.TECH.

After the successful launch of dual-fuel engines in September 2020, BEH2YDRO is now launching 100% hydrogen engines.

We can speak of a real milestone here with the BEH2YDRO combustion engines on 100% hydrogen ! Zero emissions together with high efficiency and simplicity of concept for numerous applications.

Tim Berckmoes - CEO of ABC Engines

Dual-fuel engines

Operating on 85% hydrogen gas and 15% conventional fuel, they make the owner or user less dependent on fossil fuels and reduce CO2 emissions by as much as 85%! They can also be used flexibly when hydrogen is (temporarily) not available.

100% hydrogen engines

In recent years, however, BEH2YDRO has not rested on its laurels and has been working hard on an additional, completely new range of 100% hydrogen engines.

The pioneering BEH2YDRO hydrogen engines deliver 100% clean energy. They emit no harmful emissions such as carbon (CO2), nitrogen (NOx), sulphur oxides (SOx) or soot particles. In addition, they are non-toxic and:

  • no use is made of scarce raw materials such as lithium, zinc, cobalt, platinum, rare earths, ...;
  • Avoid environmental damage caused by the extraction of scarce raw materials;
  • they do not cause any damage to human health;
  • the by-products are completely safe (the emissions consist of water vapour and air sucked in).

They also have a long service life, thanks to an optimised air/gas mixture that reduces component heat-up.

With the launch of this monofuel hydrogen engine we are taking an important next step in the development of our BEH2YDRO engines. BEH2YDRO can now supply both dual fuel and mono-fuel hydrogen applications for a wide range of heavy industrial applications such as shipping, gensets, locomotives, etc. Thanks to BEH2YDRO we can already green a large part of the off-grid industry today.

Power and utilisation

The innovative 100% hydrogen engine range has been developed for heavy duty applications and has a power range from 1 MW to 2.6 MW. These hydrogen engines are available in 6- and 8-cylinder in-line engines and 12- and 16-cylinder V-engines. As a main drive or in combination with an alternator, they are a reliable and 100% environmentally friendly source of energy for ships, drilling rigs or other marine applications. They are also ideally suited for driving locomotives.

In addition, the BEH2YDRO hydrogen engines are extremely versatile because they have no problem with slight impurities in the hydrogen. For example, they can also be used to recover waste hydrogen instead of flaring it. The BEH2YDRO 100% hydrogen engines use proven technology and are designed to ensure long term and efficient operation. In addition to their long service life, they are also very easy to maintain. This saves costs and time for owners and operators.

A 1MW BeHydro hydrogen-powered engine...

... reduces CO2 emissions by 3.500 tonnes per year (or the equivalent of 300 hectares of forest).

... can be used to convert 13.600 diesel locomotives in Europe to hydrogen.

... produces as much energy as one 3 MW wind turbine or 36.000 solar panels.

On Tuesday, 10 May 2022, Windcat Workboats and CMB.TECH announced that the first hydrogen-powered CTV is ready for immediate operation after successful completion of trials and bunkering. This ground-breaking development for both the marine and offshore wind industries is the first CTV that uses clean fuels to reduce up to 80% of its traditional fuel usage and associated emissions. The Hydrocat 48 is a further green development, introducing clean fuel technology on the already very fuel efficient and high performing Windcat MK 3.5 design.

O&L group & CMB.TECH launch Namibia's first green hydrogen production plant

On Tuesday, 22 February 2022, the Ohlthaver & List (O&L) Group and CMB.TECH launched Namibia's first green hydrogen production plant. The plant, a demonstration hub for hydrogen applications, will be built in the Erongo region. The construction will start during 2022 with the aim to be operational by the end of 2023. Depending on the results of the demonstration plant, a larger scale production plant will follow in a second phase, possibly using ammonia as transport fuel.
